polystyrene<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">It shows <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">excellent <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">results for <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">t<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">he <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">three <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">innovative <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">recycling processes <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">h<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">igh purity mechanical <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">recycling, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">d<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">issolution and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">d<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">epolymerisation <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">compared <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">end<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">of<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">life option <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">incineration <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">production of virgin <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">polystyrene<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid7\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">The <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">LCA <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">f<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ocus<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ed <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">on <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">closed <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">loop <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">recycling routes <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">back to food contact quality<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid7\" class=\"markedContent\"> <\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid8\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid9\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2022<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">High purity mechanical recycling <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">polystyrene <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">feed stock <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">from separate <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">collection <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">saves <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">approx. 8<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">0% <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">CO<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">2 <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">emissions <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">c<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ompared to incineration <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">conventional <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">production <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">of virgin <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">polystyrene<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid10\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2022<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">D<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">issolution technology exhibits <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">75<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">% CO<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">2<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">emission savings.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid11\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">\u2022<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">D<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">epolymerisation <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">also saves app<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">rox<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">. 75% of CO<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">2<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">emissions<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid12\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid13\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid14\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">Th<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">is <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">LCA <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">study <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">o<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">f <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">p<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">olystyrene was <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">performed <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">by the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">leading <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">research institute <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Neue Materialien Bayreuth <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">GmbH <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">(<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">NMB<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">)<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">. The <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">methodology <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">used by NMB <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">followed <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">pertinent <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">international standard<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">s <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ISO<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">14040 \/ ISO 14044<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">. The <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">LCA <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">results <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">will be peer<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">reviewed. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid15\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid16\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid17\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid18\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">Dr. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Thomas Neumeyer<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Head of Division Polymers, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">NMB, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">and Regino Weber<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">, <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid19\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">Research Associate Division Polymers, <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid20\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">NMB, conducting the study, say: \u201cWe <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">used a<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">c onservative a<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">pproach to calculate the CO<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">2 <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">emissions from <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">p<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">olystyrene <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">recycling <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">yielding <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">food<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">quality products. Best practices from recently published <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page36R_mcid1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">key LCA studies were considered, same as the know<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">h<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ow of industry experts <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">globally.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page36R_mcid1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">The <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">full <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">results will be peer reviewed shortly and published later<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">on.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page36R_mcid1\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page36R_mcid2\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page36R_mcid3\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><span id=\"page36R_mcid4\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\">Dr. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Norbert Niessner<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Global Head of R&amp;D\/IP<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">at <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">INEOS Styrolution and Chair <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">Technologies <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">at <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">SCS<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\"> comments<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">: <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">\u201c<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">The ability to produce <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">circular <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">food<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">grade <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">PS <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">recyclate <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">with <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">all three major recycling <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">technologies <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">a<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">l<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">ready <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">makes PS stand out<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">And <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">now<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">,<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">this <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">also <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">comes at a significantly reduced CO<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">2 <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">footprint<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\">.
