Huhtamaki Foundation sets up its first recycling plant in Maharashtra, India, as part of its #<\/strong>C<\/strong>lose<\/strong>T<\/strong>he<\/strong>L<\/strong>oop initiative<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Huhtamaki Foundation inaugurated its first recycling plant in Khopoli, Maharashtra today to help drive circularity for packaging. The site \u2013 which is spread across 2,000 square meters \u2013 will recycle about 1,600 kilograms of post-consumer used flexible plastic waste per day from early May as the plant becomes fully operational. The Central Pollution Board of India (2012) estimates that India generates close to 26,000 tonnes of plastic waste a day and a little over 10,000 tonnes a day of plastic waste remains uncollected.<\/p>\n

The recycling plant was set up with an investment of INR 90 million as part of the Huhtamaki Foundation\u2019s #CloseTheLoop initiative to tackle post-consumer waste to deliver a valuable secondary resource material. It will process post-consumer waste to create resin to produce refined compounds to be used for household products for consumers in India.<\/p>\n

The Recycling plant \u2013 which is the first of a kind \u2013 uses advanced technology to enable the efficient sorting of post-consumer waste, hot washing to remove any contamination, extrusion with extra filtration and deodorisation. This ensures the recycled material can then be used for domestic appliances. The Huhtamaki Foundation worked with the local community and authority in Maharashtra, NGOs, social enterprises, and educational institutes \u2013 including Swachh, Stri Mukti Sanghtana, CIPET and ICT \u2013 to develop this sustainable plastic waste management system. The plant will be fully operational from May 2, 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe <\/em>Huhtamaki Foundation has been set up<\/em> to work <\/em>towards<\/em> the <\/em>conservation of <\/em>the <\/em>environment <\/em>in<\/em> India with a focus on driving sustainable packaging solutions and driving forward the circular economy by setting up recycling schemes<\/em>.<\/em> It<\/em> actively advocate<\/em>s<\/em> for <\/em>alternate sustainable <\/em>p<\/em>lastic <\/em>p<\/em>ackaging structures, solution<\/em>s<\/em> and ease of recyclability<\/em>\u201d<\/em>,<\/em> said Sunil <\/strong>Bhagwat<\/strong>, Trustee of Huhtamaki Foundation.<\/p>\n

\u201cSetting up the recycling plant is the first step that the <\/em>Huhtamaki <\/em>Foundation has taken in <\/em>the direction of driving circularity<\/em>. Over the next few years,<\/em> we will strive to<\/em> set up <\/em>similar facilities <\/em>in major geographies in India.<\/em> We are <\/em>constantly <\/em>evaluating <\/em>newer recycling technologies that could be deployed<\/em>\u201d, he further added.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/em>The Huhtamaki Foundation is a charitable trust settled by Huhtamaki with a view to support the conservation of the environment\u00a0in India and carry out activities in relation to plastic waste.<\/em> Its focus is on sustainable packaging solutions and driving forward the circular economy by setting up<\/em>, amongst others,<\/em> programs in environmental sustainability and recyclability, with a view to identify, incubate a<\/em>n<\/em>d invest in opportunities designed to intercept plastics at source by collecting, sorting, processing and recycling waste so that waste gets diverted from the environment into the recycling value chain, furthering the circular economy, <\/em>thereby<\/em> benefitting the <\/em>environment, industries and <\/em>public at large<\/em>\u201d<\/em>,<\/em> said <\/em>Marco Hilty<\/strong>, President Flexible Packaging Huhtamaki.<\/p>\n

\u201cFood packagin<\/em>g<\/em> is instrumental in driving access to affordable food for all by ensuring hygiene and safety of <\/em>food and<\/em> kee<\/em>ping <\/em>it <\/em>edible for longer. Whi<\/em>lst<\/em> the functionality of <\/em>packaging can\u2019t be<\/em> compromised<\/em>, <\/em>further improvements in the<\/em> management of post-consumer packaging waste is essential <\/em>if <\/em>w<\/em>e are <\/em>to <\/em>close the loop on circularity<\/em>\u201d<\/em>,<\/em> said<\/em> Thomasine Kamerling<\/strong>, Executive Vice President of Sustainability and Communications at Huhtamaki.<\/p>\n

In <\/em>addition<\/em>, <\/em>c<\/em>losing the loop on waste handling and circularity will help in addressing some of the environmental and social impacts caused by improper waste management. Sorting waste at home is recommended as the way to prevent household waste from ending up at a landfill. By separating organic waste, plastic <\/em>waste<\/em> and other dry recyclables, which can be composted, recycled and upcycled, <\/em>consumers <\/em>can become part of the solution<\/em>\u201d,<\/em> she added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
