{"id":41646,"date":"2025-07-09T07:59:05","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T05:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/plas.tv\/?p=41646"},"modified":"2025-07-04T10:01:02","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T08:01:02","slug":"new-luminy-pla-lca-results-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/plas.tv\/?p=41646","title":{"rendered":"New Luminy PLA LCA Results Released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From vision to reality \u2013 Luminy PLA enables low-carbon solutions with pathways to carbon neutrality and beyond<\/p>\n<p>TotalEnergies Corbion releases new Luminy\u00ae PLA\u00a0life cycle assessment (LCA)\u00a0results, highlighting major progress in low-carbon bioplastics. \u00a0The newly published whitepaper and supporting materials reveal that Luminy\u00ae PLA delivers\u00a0up to 85% lower carbon footprint than conventional plastics and can further reach carbon neutrality with 30% recycled content and even achieve negative carbon footprint with 100% recycled PLA, when considering biogenic carbon.<\/p>\n<p>Using 2024 production data from the TotalEnergies Corbion plant in Thailand, this third-party verified LCA, conducted in line with\u00a0ISO 14040\/14044\/14067 standards, quantifies environmental impacts across\u00a016 key categories, following the EU\u2019s Environmental Footprint (EF) method. The assessment covers both virgin PLA\u2014derived from sugarcane\u2014and recycled PLA sourced from post-consumer and post-industrial waste.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Virgin Luminy\u00ae PLA\u00a0has a cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of 0.29 kg CO\u2082-eq per kg, including biogenic carbon stored in the product &#8211; an\u00a085% reduction\u00a0compared to conventional plastics.<\/li>\n<li>With\u00a030% recycled content, Luminy\u00ae PLA already achieves\u00a0carbon neutrality\u00a0(0.01 kg CO\u2082-eq per kg).<\/li>\n<li>100% recycled Luminy\u00ae PLA\u00a0goes even further, with a footprint of\u00a0-0.65 kg CO\u2082-eq per kg, &#8211; a negative carbon footprint.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThanks to years of innovation and process optimization, we\u2019re now offering PLA grades with even lower carbon footprint,\u201d said\u00a0Thomas Philipon, CEO of TotalEnergies Corbion. \u201cThis is a major step forward for bioplastics and our mission to deliver solutions that enable our customers on their sustainability journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maelenn Ravard, Sustainability Manager, added: \u201cThis new LCA proves that Luminy\u00ae PLA can play a critical role in building a circular bioeconomy &#8211; being biobased, industrially compostable, and recyclable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of its commitment to transparency and action, TotalEnergies Corbion continues to drive the circular bioeconomy through innovation, responsible sourcing, and transparency in environmental reporting.
