Arkema, winner of the JEC Innovation Award 2019, „Construction“ category

At the JEC Innovation Award ceremony on March 13, 2019, Arkema received first prize in the „Construction“ category for its innovation entailing glass fiber-composite reinforcement for concrete and composite cables for prestressed concrete made with the Elium® resin.

This award recognizes the development and manufacture of glass fiber composite reinforcement bars (rebars) as well as cables for prestressed concrete applications in partnership with SIREG (Arcore, Italy), the University of Miami, and the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP).

These products made of glass fiber and Elium® thermoplastic resin have been processed through pultrusion using this technology’s standard equipment. These composite products do not rust or corrode; additionally, Elium® based rebars and cables can be reheated and easily shaped or bent, reducing the cost of supplying rebars with custom shapes.

The use of composite materials for concrete prestressing is a major innovation, revolutionizing the durability of concrete construction to an unprecedented level since its invention in the 1930s.

„We are proud of this award for this type of application that is expected to grow significantly in the coming years and become one of the major uses of composites around the world.“

Finally, the use of a thermoplastic matrix sets the stage for the recycling of these parts, which, in this particular case, will help generate cost savings throughout the value chain: extended lifetime for concrete, lower environmental impact, recycling and re-use.
